LONDON, July 18: Even as England is all set to break free of covid restrictions
on Monday as per Prime Minister Boris Johnson's plan, the new British Health
Secretary Sajid Javid, who had taken both doses of covid vaccine, tested positive
in an RT-PCR confirmatory test on Saturday night after a positive lateral flow
test result in the morning. He had begun self-isolation at home for 10 days
after the lateral test, which followed mild symptoms like weakness overnight
Friday.
(Lateral flow test provides a quick result. It uses a device similar
to a pregnancy test. This is done only in asymptomatic cases, and needs confirmation.)
Javid said that after feeling "a bit groggy", he took the test (lateral flow
test) Saturday morning. He tweeted, "This morning I tested (lateral flow test)
positive for Covid. I’m waiting for my PCR result, but thankfully I have had
my jabs and symptoms are mild. Please make sure you come forward for your vaccine
if you haven’t already."
"If everyone plays their part, you're not only protecting yourself and your
loved ones, but you're also safeguarding the NHS and helping to preserve our
way of life," he added. Javid had his second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine
on May 16.
The Test and Trace staff are looking at his recent close contacts like anyone
having been within 1-2 metres for more than 15 minutes.
Javid was reportedly at 10 Downing Street on Friday and met face to face with
Prime Minister Boris Johnson who had contracted covid last year and was hospitalised.
Javid also appeared alongside Ministers in Parliament last week. Besides, he
visited many other offices and people.
Downing Street said Boris Johnson and Finance Minister Rishi Sunak would take
part in a new programme, where daily tests replace self-isolation. The Opposition
has raised objections over this double standard.
Javid had on June 26 replaced former Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who resigned
following allegations that he flouted covid restrictions.
July 19 plan
Although the infections are mounting every day, the Government has insisted
on keeping the deadline of July 19 (Monday ) to end all legal restrictions and
break free of covid curbs in England. It claims it can manage any worsening
situation as two-thirds of the adult population has been vaccinated. Since January,

OPINION: A nutty 'new' Trump must know checking illegal immigration is his job and not theirs. And 'penalty' tariff is not a solution. However, Trump talking about "major threat" from "illegal aliens" (illegal immigration) is about what he believes, right or wrong, and to that extent he is genuine and honest; it is certainly not a pretension to prop up his political relevance. Bullies are always true to themselves. Look at India's crooked politicians shouting day in, day out to prove they are more patriotic, and to whip up public sentiments for them to ride on!
