GUWAHATI, Dec 20: In a heartbreaking incident, eight elephants were killed
and one calf injured when the Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express collided with
a herd in Assam’s Hojai district early Saturday morning, The accident also caused
the derailment of the locomotive and five coaches. No passengers were harmed.
The accident occurred at 2:17 am the elephants attempted to cross the tracks
near Changjurai in Hojai district, along the Jamunamukh–Kampur section under
the Lumding Division of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), 126 km from Guwahati.
The loco pilot applied emergency brakes upon seeing the elephants but the train
could not be stopped on time. Accident relief trains and senior railway officials,
including the General Manager of NFR and the Divisional Railway Manager of Lumding,
rushed to the site to oversee rescue and restoration operations.
Following the accident, forest officials and railway staff worked together
to clear the tracks and assess the damage. The rail traffic through the section
was suspended temporarily, with restoration efforts underway. The injured calf
is being monitored by forest veterinarians, though its condition remains uncertain.
After the derailed coaches were detached, the Rajdhani Express resumed its
journey towards Guwahati at around 6:15 am. Additional coaches were to be attached
at Guwahati before the train continued to its final destination.
Wildlife activists plea
The authorities have announced an inquiry into the incident, focusing on whether
existing safety protocols were followed and what additional measures can be
implemented to prevent future tragedies. Wildlife activists have already renewed
calls for urgent intervention, stressing that Assam’s elephants—already facing
habitat loss—cannot afford repeated losses from railway accident
The tragedy highlights a long-standing conflict between wildlife movement and
railway infrastructure in Assam. The State is home to a significant population
of wild elephants, and railway tracks often cut through their traditional migratory
corridors. Despite efforts such as speed restrictions in elephant zones, installation
of warning systems, and coordination between forest and railway departments,
collisions continue to occur.
Past incidents have shown similar patterns: elephants crossing tracks at night
or early morning, when visibility is low and train speeds are high. Conservationists
have repeatedly urged for dedicated underpasses, overpasses, and better monitoring
systems to prevent such accidents. Assam has witnessed multiple elephant deaths
due to train collisions in recent years, making this one of the most pressing
wildlife safety concerns in the region.
The CCTV footage and the video circulating on social media do not indicate any serious abnormalities in takeoff or descent, it has been confirmed. The disaster is becoming curiouser and curiouser. The flight path was not curvy. And the aircraft maintained a steady, gliding descent with its nose straight and the wings perfectly level. Many of the victims were charred beyond recognition, making identification difficult. Three hundred nineteen body parts have been sent for DNA matching with relatives to determine the identities.

PROGNOSIS: It looks a Real New Trump is emerging - courageous, balanced, powerful and disinterested. The terminations are part of a large-scale exercise going on all across Fed departments and organisations to reduce wasteful Government expenditure as decided by a Trump in a mess gone berserk, and improve administrative efficiency following the whims of billionaire and his associate Elon MusK and his DOGE. It has not been shared how terminations are going to raise the efficiency bar! It looks like Trump has stolen some of the prescriptions meant for India. But the American problems are quite different.

OPINION: A nutty 'new' Trump must know checking illegal immigration is his job and not theirs. And 'penalty' tariff is not a solution. However, Trump talking about "major threat" from "illegal aliens" (illegal immigration) is about what he believes, right or wrong, and to that extent he is genuine and honest; it is certainly not a pretension to prop up his political relevance. Bullies are always true to themselves. Look at India's crooked politicians shouting day in, day out to prove they are more patriotic, and to whip up public sentiments for them to ride on!
