Helicopters collide in New Jersey, narrow escape for two in Houston

WASHINGTON, Dec 31: The final weekend of 2025 has been marked by a somber tragedy in New Jersey and a breathtaking "miracle" in Texas, as federal investigators scramble to understand a pair of aviation incidents that illustrate the razor-thin margins of safety in the skies.

In Hammonton, New Jersey, a routine flight between two lifelong friends turned fatal on Sunday morning. Authorities have identified the victims as Kenneth Kirsch, 65, and Michael Greenberg, 71, both experienced pilots who were well-known fixtures at the local municipal airport.

At the peak of the conflict, the aircraft were separated by a Vertical Separation of approximately 400 to 500 feet.

Horizontal (lateral) separation: Roughly 1,200 to 1,300 feet (about a quarter-mile).

To put these numbers in perspective, standard separation requirements for aircraft in this type of environment are typically 1,000 feet vertically or 3 miles horizontally.

Witnesses at the Apron Cafe, where the duo had just shared breakfast, watched in horror as the two helicopters—an Enstrom F-28A and an Enstrom 280C—took off together before colliding approximately a mile and a half from the runway. According to the Hammonton Police Department, the aircraft became entangled midair, causing both to spin violently into a farm field. Pilot Greenberg was pronounced dead at the scene, while Kirsch succumbed to his injuries after being airlifted to a regional trauma center. One helicopter was engulfed in flames,

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has begun a "see and avoid" investigation, focusing on whether sun glare or cockpit blind spots prevented the pilots from maintaining visual separation. "They were regulars, kind people who flew together nearly every week," said Sal Silipino, the cafe’s owner. "To see them fall from the sky like that is simply heart-wrenching."

Seconds from Disaster: The Houston "Near-Miss"

While New Jersey mourns, the aviation community is reeling from the release of harrowing ATC audio involving a close call at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). On December 18, but only fully detailed this week, two commercial jets narrowly avoided a catastrophic midair collision during simultaneous departures.

The incident involved Volaris Flight 4321, an Airbus A320neo bound for El Salvador, and United Express Flight 4814, an Embraer E145 operated by CommuteAir. After taking off from parallel runways, the Volaris pilot inadvertently executed a right turn instead of the assigned left turn. This error placed the heavy Airbus on a direct intercept course with the smaller regional jet.

The disaster was averted only when the onboard Traffic Collision Avoidance Systems (TCAS) in both cockpits issued "Resolution Advisories," commanding the pilots to climb and descend immediately. Ground radar showed the planes coming within a terrifyingly short distance of one another before banking away. The FAA has confirmed a full investigation into the pilot deviation and the response time of air traffic controllers, who were reportedly managing heavy traffic loads at the time.

While technology saved hundreds of lives in Houston, the manual "see and avoid" requirements of general aviation proved insufficient to save two friends in New Jersey.
