NEW DELHI, Dec 15: Over 60 flights were cancelled and 400 others delayed due to low visibility as a thick layer of fog enveloped Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) since the wee hours of Monday.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) reading in the national Capital was 454, labelled as ‘severe’, at 7:00 am as per the Central Pollution Control Board. On Sunday it stood at 461, one of the worst December days on record.

Argentine footballer Lionel Messi's arrival in Delhi on the final leg of his GOAT Tour was delayed and a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi was cancelled as he was scheduled to leave on a three-nation foreign tour covering Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman in the afternoon.

Messi was scheduled to arrive in the Capital at 10:45 am from Mumbai where he had the third stop of his tour on Sunday. His chartered flight landed in Delhi nearly four hours behind and the stadium event was scheduled to start at 2:30 pm.

The Delhi airport had issued a travel advisory for passengers warning that flight operations may face delays.

"Due to dense fog, flight operations may experience disruptions. We are working closely with all stakeholders to minimise inconvenience to passengers. For the latest flight updates, passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines. We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused," the airport said in a post on X.

Graded Response Action

Indigo airline said Delhi airport is seeing its first winter fog Monday morning, and visibility around the airport is currently reduced. As operations adjust to the changing weather, some flights may take a little longer to depart.

Road traffic was also be slow due to the fog, so it is recommend allowing additional time while planning journey to the airport, it cautioned.

The air quality status was declared 'severe' on Saturday as the index crossed the 400 mark. An AQI reading pf <50 is considered 'good', <100 'satisfactory', <200 'moderate', <300 'poor', <400 'very poor' and <500 'severe'.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) on Saturday, stipulating 50 per cent of staff in Government and private offices work from home, while all schools until Class 11 (except Class 10) were directed to conduct classes in hybrid mode. All construction and demolition activities in NCR region were also stopped.

ANALYSIS: "The standard operating procedure for deportations by aircraft used by ICE that is effective from 2012 provides for the use of restraints," says the Government.
