The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), developed by the Adani Group, officially began commercial flight operations on Thursday with a glittering inaugural ceremony and a full day of scheduled services.

MUMBAI, Dec 25 (INS): The long-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport opened its doors to passengers on Thursday morning, ushering in a new era for India’s aviation sector. The launch marks a historic expansion of Mumbai’s aviation capacity, easing congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

The first commercial flight, IndiGo 6E460 from Bengaluru, landed at 8 am and was greeted with a traditional water cannon salute, symbolizing the formal commencement of operations. The ceremony included cake-cutting and coconut-breaking rituals by airline staff, blending modern aviation milestones with cultural traditions.

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani personally welcomed passengers, interacting with frontline staff and first-time flyers, underscoring the group’s commitment to customer experience and operational excellence. The event was attended by dignitaries, aviation officials, and industry leaders, highlighting the strategic importance of NMIA as one of India’s largest greenfield airport projects delivered in record time.

On its first day, NMIA handled flights from nine domestic destinations, serving more than 4,000 passengers. Airlines including IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air, and Star Air connected the new facility to major Indian cities. Initial operations are being conducted in a phased manner, with around 30 flights daily—15 arrivals and 15 departures.

The airport is currently focused on domestic routes, but international services are expected to follow once subsequent phases are completed. When fully operational, NMIA is projected to handle up to 90 million passengers annually, placing it among the busiest airports in Asia.

Built to ease congestion at Mumbai’s existing airport, NMIA positions the Mumbai Metropolitan Region alongside global hubs such as London, New York, and Tokyo, which operate multiple airports to manage growing passenger volumes.

The facility boasts modern terminals, advanced baggage systems, and sustainable design features, aligning with Adani Group’s emphasis on efficiency and environmental responsibility.

The airport’s phased expansion will gradually introduce international connectivity, cargo operations, and enhanced passenger amenities. Industry experts view NMIA as a catalyst for regional growth, boosting employment, tourism, and business opportunities across Navi Mumbai and beyond

It has not been shared how terminations are going to raise the efficiency bar! It looks like Trump has stolen some of the prescriptions meant for India. But the American problems are quite different.

ANALYSIS: "The standard operating procedure for deportations by aircraft used by ICE that is effective from 2012 provides for the use of restraints," says the Government.
