Constable bride elopes with history-sheeter, ditches groom
MEERUT, Feb 12: A kidnapping report filed n Meerut a week ago has turned out to be an elopement story. The constable bride disappeared from her house the night before wedding even as all preparations were ready for the ceremony.

She told the police who came looking for her following a missing report from her father that she chose to elope on her own. She eloped with a history-sheeter, ditching the groom, also a constable.

Recent reports from Uttar Pradesh indicate a trend of brides eloping with lovers just before or after wedding ceremonies.

In Unnao in December last, a bride eloped with her lover shortly after the varmala (garland) ceremony. The bride told her father over the phone that she wanted to live with her lover. Last November, a bride in Barabanki went missing after dancing with the groom at the jaimala ceremony, leaving the family in shock. In Budaun in last June, a 20-year-old woman eloped with her lover a month after her marriage. In April last a woman in Aligarh eloped with her daughter's would-be son-in-law 10 days before the wedding, according to reports.
