TIRUCHIRAPPALLI( Tiruchi / Trichi)

     A city of historical importance. It is situated on the banks of Kaveri river. Places of interest: Rock Fort: The 83 mts high rock is about 3,800 million years old. There are 344 steps which take one to the top. Third century BC inscriptions can be found on the top. The rock has been witness to many a war. There is a temple on the top called Uchipillaiyar Koil, dedicated to Lord Vinayaka. At another location on the rock there is a Shiv linga which is a protrusion of the rock itself. Below, one can see Pallava cave temples wherein there are 6th and 7th century sculptures. At the foot of the rock Robert Clive had a house. The building is now a part of an educational institution. Srirangam: 7 km away, it is an important pilgrim centre, surrounded by the waters of Kaveri and Kollidam. It is known for its temples. Likewise, Jambukeswarar temple (8 km), Gunaseelam (22 km), Kodumbalur (42 km), Vayaloor (8 km) and Samayapuram (20 km) are also places of famous temples. Kallanai (24 km): A tourist spot, this dam was built in the 2nd century AD to utilise the Kaveri waters. Still in use, it is made of blocks of stones. Kolli Hlls (90 km): This hill station has an altitude of 1190 mts. There is a very old temple on Chathuragiri there. The Agasagangai waterfalls flows down 200 ft. Every year in August a tourism festival s celebrated here. Pulliancholai is a nearby tourist spot.

How to reach: Tiruchi has a major rail junction, connecting Chennai, Thanjavur, Madurai, Tirupathi, Tuticorin, Rameswaram, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Mysore, Kochi, Kanyakumari and Mangalore on both meter and broad guages. By road also Tiruchi is connected to all towns. Bus, taxi, autorickshaw and cycle rickshaw are available for local transport.
