THANJAVUR Thanjavur has a rich heritage of the arts and learning of the medieval period. The place is known for handicrafts and musical instruments. Some of the sites to be seen around are Sri Brahadeeswarar temple, built by the Cholas, the palace, built by the Nayaks and the Marathas, Saraswathi Mahal, a library of palm leaves and manuscripts in Indian and European languages, a Hall of Music in the Palace, and Schwartz church in the palace garden, built in memory of Rev. Schwartz of the Danish mission.

Kumbakonam (16 km), famous for temples, Tharangambadi (105 km), a Danish
settlement of the 17th century on the coast, Swamimalai (32 km), one
of the six abodes dedicated to Lord Shiva, Thiruvaiyaru (13 km), where
saint composer Thyagaraja lived, Nagore (88 km), a Muslim pilgrm centre,
Velankanni (90 km), a Roman Catholic centre, Vedaranyam (104 km), a
pilgrim centre, Nagapattinam (83 km), a port town, Tiruvarur (55 km),
the birth place of saint composer Thyagaraja, Thirunallur (101 km) (part
of Pondicherry Union Territory), well-known for the Saturn temple.
