RAMESWARAM

     Rameswaram is a small island in the Gulf of Mannar. It is an important pilgrim center. Lord Rama on return from Lanka stopped over here first for a thanksgiving to the Gods. The Ramanathaswamy temple here is well-known for its massive corridors. The sea water in front of the temple is sacred and is known as Agnitheertham. Mandapam (18 km) connects Rameswaram with the mainland.

Boat ride to Kurusadi island is taken out from here. Kurusadi and other islands (23 km) are studies for biologists. Ramanathapuram, 55 km fromRameswaram, is the district headquarter and an ancient town.
