E Gayathri: Veena

          A prncipal, plucked instrument of Carnatic music of the lute category. Made of jackwood. Its flat-faced finger board is scooped out from the same log of wood and called 'Ek Dandi Veena'. The decorative peg box is carved in the shape of snake called Vyali. There are four main metal strings, three drone strings and two bridges - one main and other secondary. There are twenty-four metal frets, fitted on the finger board by means of wax. A popular instrument of south Indian classical music.
