A large barrel-shaped bifacial drum made of jackwood, both openingscovered by layered skin and tied over the rim with the help of bamboo hoops and braces, thavil is played by hand and stick. The left face of the drum is loaded with paste from inside. It is used in folk and traditional music, particularly in the instrumental ensemble called Periyamelam in accompaniment to nagaswaram, a double-reed wind instrument. |
