Mridangam

          A popular bifacial drum of Carnatic music, made of jackwood,

Umayalpuram K Sivaraman: Mridangam

mridangam is a cylindrical body tapered at the ends. Layered parchments,astened to leather hoops and kept intact and tight by leather braces. At times small pieces of wood are also put in between these braces to facilitate the tuning. Black paste is loaded on the right face in layers. Fine flour dough is applied on the left face before the performance and taken out immediately afterwards. It is used as an accompaniment in south Indian classical music.
