Delayed Monsoon Breaks Over Central India, Ends Drought

          NEW DELHI: Ending a long dry spell, it rained on Wednesday, July 31 almost all over central and northern India facing severe drought due to delayed monsoon which normally breaks over in June. But the monsoon was yet to come.

           Lucknow got 79.2 mm of rain. Raipur, capital of Chhattisgarh, received 38.2 mm. It was not heavy in Rajasthan. However, Alwar district got 76 mm. Delhi had just 1.5 mm. It was vigorous in Chandigarh and several parts of Uttar Pradesh.

           The delayed monsoon yet to arrive, it rained again on Sunday, August 4 in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. According to meteorological sources, the low pressure zone called trough responsible for rainfall started moving towards central India since July 31, starting off rain in the foothills of the Himalayas.

           After these doses of showers, the long-awaited monsoon season started on Tuesday, August 13. It rained 60 to 70 mm and the temperature came down to 28 degrees C in Delhi. Haryana, Punjab and other drought-affected regions also started receiving the monsoon rains.

           At many places the rains wreaked havoc. In Tehri a cloudburst killed 28 people.on Sunday, August 11.

           Meanwhile, the flood situation in Bihar and the north-east like Assam and Manipur worsened. Even while it was drought during July in central India, Bihar and these places were reeling under the fury of floods even by the middle of August. The first phase of normal south-west monsoon lasts four months, from June to September. It starts from the Kerala coast in the first week of June.
