Three Indian-American women killed as car flies off bridge in South Carolina
The car was allegedly travelling above the permitted speed limit. Its detection system alerted family members about the crash who informed local authorities. The police on arrival found the car stuck on a tree in pieces, a rare sight, they said.
GREENVILLE (South Carolina), Apr 27: Three Indian women were killed when their
SUV swerved off the road and fell off a bridge onto a bunch of trees on the
ground below in South Carolina on Friday. The debris were stuck on the trees.
The accident occurred in Greenville County. The driver escaped with injuries
and is being treated at a local hospital.
The car crossed several lanes before leaping up 20 feet into the air from the
bridge and crashed into the woods on the opposite side of the bridge. The accident
occurred on Inter-state 85 at Staunton Bridge Road around midday (local time),
according to reports. “When the vehicle jumped all four lanes of traffic, it
actually struck trees probably at least 20 feet above the ground,” the police
said.
The victims have been identified as Rekhaben Patel, Sangitaben Patel and Manishaben
Patel hailing from the Vasna (Borsad) and Kavitha villages in Borsad taluka
of Anand district of the Indian State of Gujarat. They were residents of Georgia,
coming to South Carolina. Rekhaben and Sangitaben lived in Atlanta. The three
women were related. Rekha and Sangita’s husbands – Dilip Patel and Bhavnesh
Patel respectively – are brothers, while Manisha’s husband Rajendra is a cousin
of the two men, a local report said.

“Very seldom do you see a vehicle that leaves the roadway at such a high rate
of speed that it jumps 4-6 lanes of traffic and lands in the trees approximately
20 feet,” Chief Deputy Coroner Mike Ellis from the Greenville County Coroner’s
Office said. It is rare to to see an SUV lodged on a tree, he said.
