Floods wreak havoc in Orissa, Maharashtra, Gujarat
Jajpur/Bhubaneshwar/Mumbai: The flood situation in Orissa, Maharashtra and Gujarat continues to be grim. More than 200 villages are still marooned in Orissa. Heavy torrential rains lashed the state for 5 consecutive days till Saturday, killing at least 36 people by flash floods and lightning. Marooned villagers said all they had got as government relief so far was 200 grams of rice and jaggery. In Jajpur district, farmers were the worst hit, as their fields got flooded for the fourth time in as many years. The state government said rescue and relief work was in full gear, but it could not yet give specific figures regarding the same. Thirty villages in south-est Maharashtra have been cut off from the rest of the state following heavy rains. Talking to reporters, a government spokesman said that over 30 villages in Kolhapur and Satara districts have been cut off as roads and bridges connecting them have been submerged. Meanwhile, sources said that several of the 86 dams in the state have started filling up due to heavy rainfall.
