Meghalaya
summer camp delights
Ri-Bhoi (Meghalaya): Cashing in on the lush green and eco-friendly environment prevailing in the North Easterm region of the country, the tourism department of Assam recently organised a summer camp focussing on adventure sports. Over forty individuals, most of them children, participated in the three-day summer camp organized by the tourism department (July 21-July 23) in Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. During the camp many events that included rafting, kayaking, rescuing and other water sports were organised. "For me, it is a chance of enjoying and getting fit through physical exercises. We feel rejuvenated with such events. I have been doing this for the past five years. I am enjoying the environment here," said Debang, a participant. According
to the State Tourism officials, eco tourism has a great potential in this
part of the country in the wake of prevailing environment. "Eco tourism
has a very big potential over here. I believe eco tourism and eco adventure
are more or less related things. Eco tourism means the growth of tourism
without disturbing the ecological balance, and here, the entire North
East you see is the belt of eco tourism," said Niren Deka, an official,
Assam State Tourism Department. Besides the children were also taught
the importance of protecting the environment during the camp. Nature in
all its glory--limpid lakes, expansive rivers, unpolluted rushing streams
breaking into waterfalls, twisting and turning, disappearing into the
jungle has bestowed Meghalaya a rare beauty. Nestling between tall and
elegant whispering Pines at an altitude of 4750 ft above sea level, the
18 hole Shillong Golf Course finds mention in International Directories
of Golf Courses of repute. The north-eastern part of the country bestowed
with lush green hills, streams and rivers has an immense potential for
eco tourism and adventure sports.
