Tripura makes a strong fashion statement
Agartala: Fashion
designers of Tripura, it seems, are keen to make a name for
themselves. This was more than apparent at a recent fashion
show sponsored by Fashion Exotica, a prominent fashion house
here, which said that it was keen to give an opportunity to
the state's "young and vibrant" fashion designers. It was
also the state's first fashion show. Fashion Exotica roped
in three talented fashion designers Anindita Karmakar, Bobby
Ali and Kaushik Deb to showcase their talent. They made a
generous use of traditional tribal fabrics, motives, colours,
and patterns in their collection. "I used bamboo surface ornamentation
which is Tripura's speciality. I used it in my fabrics and
my collection to make it look different from collections displyaed
at other fashion shows," said Karmakar. Bobby Ali from Assam
created a flutter with his Muga Silk designs. The collection
of these designers reflected a perfect blend of the ethnic
with the modern. Pains were taken to ensure the use of natural
vegetable dyes on various apparel. Tribal weavers were also
brought in to showcase their talent. Thirty-three models participated
in the show. "It was a great fashion show, probably the first
of its kind over here. I feel that the stuff needs to be taken
out of Agartala as people from outside the state should see
it too," said Sanjiv Mehra, a spectator.
