Salem remanded to judicial custody Mumbai:
A special court on Wednesday remanded extradited gangster Abu Salem
and his alleged aide Shah Alam to judicial custody till March 1 in connection
with the 2001 murder of Ajit Dewani, former secretary of Bollywood actress
Manisha Koirala. Salem and Alam, both were presented before Judge Abhay
Thipsay, under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) Court
located at Mazgaon. Salem told the judge that contrary to the claims of
the police, his confession was not voluntary, and that he had been forced
to confess. The court has now taken Salem's statement on record. On February
14, Shah Alam had confessed his involvement in the same case, which was
tabled before the Special MCOCA Court. Salem had on February 10 confessed
to his role in the Dewani's murder. The Ajit Dewani murder case is one
of the two cases for which the Mumbai Police was allowed to prosecute
Salem as per the conditions set by the Portuguese Government to enable
the gangster's extradition from that country. Dewani was allegedly killed
by two of Salem's henchmen outside his office in Oshiwara after he had
failed to respond to an extortion demand by Salem on June 30, 2001. Salem
has already confessed to his roles in the 1993 bomb blast case and the
Pradeep Jain muder case. Pradeep Jain, a builder from suburban Andheri,
was shot dead at his office in March 1995. The murder was suspected to
be the culmination of a tiff between Jain and Salem over the development
of a prime piece of land in Andheri. Salem had wanted Jain to sell the
land to another builder at a nominal price, but when Jain refused, he
was killed. Salem was arrested by Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on November
11, 2005 for the murder of builder Pradeep Jain. He allegedly ordered
Jain's killing as the builder did not obey orders to part with a prime
piece of land. |
