Mumbai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday denied that the deported mafia don, Abu Salem, had confessed to playing a role in the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai. Salem was taken to St George Hospital for a routine medical check-up on Monday. Thereafter, he was put under sustained interrogation, for the fourth day, by the CBI at an undisclosed location in Nariman Point. He is absolutely fine and normal. His diet is normal and does get adequate sleep, said CBI Deputy Inspector General O.P. Chhatwal. Salem's lawyers met him yesterday. They had sat with him for about an hour. Salem wanted us to brief him on the status of the Bombay bomb-blasts case. We also asked him whether he had confessed his involvement in the 1993 blasts. He, however, denied any such confession, said Salem's advocate, O. Siddique, adding: Salem also asked about Monica Bedi`s case and the legalities dealing with her.
Salem was a dreaded extortionist in the Mumbai underworld and one of the
key accused in the 1993 serial blasts. He fled India and was arrested
in Portugal in 2001 for possessing a fake passport and for allegedly manhandling
Portuguese policemen. Meanwhile in Hyderabad, a Special CBI court today
reserved its order till November 17 on an agency's petition seeking custody
of Monica Bedi, Salem's mole. Special judge C V Subramanyam heard the
CBI petition seeking custody of Bedi and posted it for Thursday. Bedi,
who was flown to Hyderabad from Mumbai after being extradited from Portugal,
was produced before the special CBI court here on November 12, which had
remanded her to judicial custody till November 25. CBI had sought five-day
custody for interrogating her and the court had posted the CBI petition
for today. |
