Assam - Festivals

THE MOST colourful, national spring festival of Assam is Rongali Bihu. Celebrated from April 13 to 16 every year, it is linked to the start of the next agricultural season. Bihu, a unique dance form, is performed in accompaniment of songs of love and passion.

Ambubashi is a festival associated with the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati. A ritual of austerities, it is celebrated during mid-June with tantric rites, revolving round the `Shakti' cult. The temple remains closed for four days, during the goddess' annual cycle of menstruation. All religious and agricultural activities come to a standstill till the doors are opened on the 4th day.(For more details click here: The Goddess of Guwaharti)
