HYDERABAD

     The capital, Huderabad, is a virtual blend of the cultural textures of the north and the south. There are plenty of historical sites, monuments and other sights. Mohammad Quli Qutub Shah founded the city in honour of his Hindu wife, it is said. Charminar:The centre of attraction in Hyderabad, this 53-mt tall structure, with four minarets, was built in memory of the eradication of a plague that struck the city in 1591. Standing close-by is Mecca Masjid, one of the biggest mosques. Its structures are made of single slabs of granite, and bricks brought from Mecca. Its construction was started in 1614 by Abdullah Qutub Shah and completed in 1687 by Aurangzeb. Next to it is seen the oldest mosque in the town, Jami Masjid. Other places one may look for in Hyderabad are Sri Venkateswara temple, Birla Observatory, Hussain Sagar lake, Nehru Zoological park, Golconda fort, Qutub Shahi tombs, Salar Jung museum etc.

How to reach: Hyderabad can be reached easily from any town by air, rail or bus

NAGARJUNA SAGAR

     Built across river Krishna, it is the world's largest masonry dam. About 150 km from Hyderabad, Nagarjuna Sagar is also an important Buddhist centre. Called Vijayapuri in ancient times, it has been renamed after Buddhist saint Acharya Nagarjuna. Seventeen centuries old Buddhist civilisation, discovered during the construction of the dam, has been excavated and preserved here at Nagarjunakonda, an island in the midst of the man-made Nagarjunasagar lake. Eleven km downstream is Ethipothala waterfalls, cascading down the hills to a 22-metre fall. The lagoon formed has a crocodile breeding centre, a tourist attraction.

How to reach: The airport nearest to Nagarjuna Sagar is in Hyderabad, 150 km away. And the nearest rail head is Macherla, 29 km from Nagarjuna Sagar. There is regular bus service to Nagarjuna Sagar from Macherla, Hyderabad, Warangal (237 km) and Vijayawada (192 km).

PUTTAPARTHI

     World-famous Godman Sri Satya Sai Baba's ashram, Prashanti Nilayam, is situated here. Visitors from all over come round the year seeking his blessings. Devotees believe he creates vibhuti (sacred ash) from nowhere like a magic and gives away to the devout.

How to reach: The nearest airports are in Bangalore (250 km) and Tirupati (300km). The nearest rail head is at Dharmavaram. There is regular bus service from all major towns.
