Plane makes emergency landing in Kolkata

Kolkata: A Jet-lite aircraft carrying 38 passengers and 8 crew members landed under emergency conditions at the Kolkata airport early on Saturday after one of its engines caught fire. The pilot of S2 361 flight going from Kolkata to Guwahati contacted the Air Traffic Control (ATC) and sought permission to land immediately, minutes after taking off at 6:29 am. Apparently, he had noticed the portside engine emitting smoke and fire and switched off the engine mid air to stop the fire. Fire brigade was on standby as the aircraft landed safely two minutes after take off. Airline sources said that the disaster was averted with the help of the pilot's presence of mind. However, the cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.
