Ice hockey, a favourite game in Ladakh
by Jigmet

Ladakh: Ice hockey is becoming one of the favorite games among the youth of Ladakh, but lack of assistance from both the State Government and the Centre has threatened the survival of the game in the region. Aspiring teams of players have somehow kept this winter sport alive on their own in the absence of any facility. "Ice hockey is very famous game in Ladakh. There are many gold medalists in this game. The Government has not done anything for the development of the game. They give their interest and attention in other games like cricket, hockey and football. We have to manage in our own for buying equipments which are very expensive," said Tundup Namgayl, a player. Ladakh Winter Sports Club (LWSC), a group of senior skaters essentially took the pain to organise Inter Clubs and Chief Minister Cup every year. "Regarding coaching, we have not received any support and help from the government. Winter Sports Club organizes the coaching every year, which offers basic and advanced courses. This year also, we will organise for 15 to 20 days," said Gyal Wangyal, Vice President Ladakh Winter Sports Club. Ladakh has got a natural gift of ice fields when the water of rivers and streams get froze during winter paving way for ice skating and ice hockey. More than 100 small children were given ice skate and hockey coaching every year by the Ladakh Winter Sports Club, Leh.
