Forest rangers rescue a leopard on prowl in Nashik

Nashik: Forest officials along with the help of fire officials here rescued a wild leopard that had entered a residential building. The leopard had entered a crowded locality of Mahatma Nagar creating panic among the residents. The leopard kept moving up and down in the staircase and in the end was caught by the rangers of the Forest Department who fired a few shots of tranquiliser darts. "During our three to three-and-half hours operation, we fired five rounds of tranquilizer darts. But only two rounds were on target. We were successful in the end as we were able to tranquilise the leopard and were able to catch hold of it," said Sudhir Wadekar, a forest official. In recent years, incidents of wild animals straying into urban areas have increased owing to loss of habitat and increased human encroachment into forest areas. In India, leopards are found all over the country. Lack of natural habitat due to rapid cutting down of trees, frequently has resulted into the entry of these felines into human habitat, in search of food. In India, it is illegal to kill leopards one among the endangered specie, presently found in Africa and Asia and often hunted for its fine fur.
