A Punjab village goes on tourism map

        Village Khurali (District Hoshiarpur, Punjab): Minister for Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni today inaugurated a tourism project for the development of village Khurali, Tehsil Garhshankar in District Hoshiarpur. Speaking on the occasion, Soni recalled the selfless service of Guru Ravidass for the upliftment of the society and said his life and teachings are still relevant to achieve goals of social justice and equality. Paying glowing tributes to Guru Ravidass, Soni said development of village Khurali as a village tourist destination is a humble tribute to the great saint of medieval India.

        The Minister said, Guru Ravidass visited and stayed for a period of about four years,1515-1519 AD, at village Khurali and his life inspires all those who are working tirelessly for the betterment of the society. She said at the place where Guru Ravidass stayed and meditated, a Gurudwara has been built which is well maintained. Dedicating the project to the masses, the Minister said the primary targeted beneficiaries from the project are residents of Khurali and nearby villages, who are disadvantaged due to small land holdings. She said the tourism project will provide opportunity for the village to have better roads and other infrastructural development in the area. Smt. Soni said, the project will benefit the women and unemployed youth, who will get self-employment opportunities in tourism-support activities such as lodging, cuisine, guiding and by providing to and fro transportation services from Garhshankar, a sub-divisional headquarter situated on the Hoshiarpur-Chandigarh a State Highway. Village Khurali is about 18 Km from Garhshankar on Benewal-Garhi Mansowal-Khurali road, and is the last village of Garhshankar sub-division. Garhshankar is around 40 Km from Hoshiarpur City on the Hoshiarpur-Chandigarh Road. Ministry of Tourism has sanctioned on 15th October, 2008 a project for development of Khurali, Distt- Hoshiarpur for the amount of Rs. 159.57 Lakh and so far released 80% of the sanctioned amount i.e. Rs. 127.65 Lakh. The components sanctioned are Construction of Display Hall cum Tourist Facilitation Centre at Ground Floor, Tourist Reception Centre, Washrooms, Construction of retaining wall and Providing and Fixing reflective tape sign board.
