Air, rail traffic off in North

New Delhi: Thick fog enveloped the entire region of northern India leading to delay and cancellation of many flights and trains on Sunday too. The Indira Gandhi International airport of New Delhi wore a picture of chaos, the air passengers left stranded following cancellation of flights. Over a two dozen flights were cancelled and more than thirty were delayed. It also hampered train movement. Over 40 trains were cancelled and an equal number of trains were rescheduled to the discomfort of the passengers who had already been waiting on the platforms for over five to ten hours. "We were not getting reservation since the past 2-3 days, now I managed to get a ticket to go to Punjab, but the train is cancelled," said Anu, a passenger. Road traffic also moved at a snail's pace in several places, as the roads remained enveloped by thick fog leading to poor visibility. The Meteorological Department has predicted that the cold wave conditions are likely to persist for the next couple of days. North India usually witnesses early morning fog every winter when night temperatures often dip below five degrees Celsius.
