Kochi carnival draws a large number of tourists

Kochi: A large number of tourists thronged Kochi to witness a carnival hosted on the occasion of New Year. This annual carnival dates back to the era of Portuguese and the revelry of New Year that the colonials practised centuries ago. However, it has evolved as an occasion for the youth to enjoy the party-like atmosphere. Games, masquerade dances and assorted competitions amid well illuminated venue fascinated the tourists, from within India as well as abroad. "We had a good time here. We are in India for the second time. The people are friendly," said Jason, a tourist from The Netherlands. The highlight of this year's Carnival was the massive procession and the fancy dress competition that enthralled one and all. "It is very unusual and different. It is good," said Poona, a tourist from England. The preparations for this colourful gala extravaganza start a month prior to the New Year. The Kochi Carnival commences a week earlier to the New Year and ends on January 1.
