Renuka lake in Himachal decays
by Hemant Chauhan
Shimla:
Famous Renuka lake in Sirmour district, near Shimla
in Himachal Pradesh, is fast turning an environmental
disaster, with heaps of domestic waste and polythene bags
dumped there everyday. The environmentalists are alarmed.
Besides, the people here are feeling hurt, as the water
of the lake is considered holy and people offer their
prayers. "People from far off places take the water with
them. They also offer prayers to this lake and take bath
in it. But some people have polluted it and spoiled it.
We appeal to the government to do something to stop the
pollution in the lake," said Baba Meedgiri, a pilgrim.
The total boundary of 3214 meters circumference area of
lake is shrinking by ten per cent every year, according
to a report. Garbage flows down the drains in to the lake
every day, decreasing its radius. The environmentalists
are also opposed to the Renuka dam project coming up in
Sirmour district. The Himachal Pradesh Government has
already drawn up a conservation project worth 450 crore
to save the dying lake. "As far as the lake is concerned,
we have the project of 450 crore rupees to clean it. Quality
would be improved and silt would be removed for lake.
We would do beautification of the area. Apart from that
the sanctuary at Renuka area would be affected after the
Renuka dam construction. For that Supreme Court have directed
us to spend five per cent of the total project.120 crore
rupees would be spent to create a world level sanctuary,"
said Prem Kumar Dhumal, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister.
Situated at the height of 672 meters from sea level, the
century old lake attracts thousands of pilgrims from across
the country.
