Tourists return to Shimla for the New Year bash
by Hemant Chauhan
Shimla:
Tourists from across the country returned to Shimla
for their New Year bash, after waiting and watching the
events following 26/11 Mumbai attacks. The state tourism
industry is gearing up to cash in on the opportunity.
The global economic recession and the recent terrorist
attacks in Mumbai had led to the tourists' flight out
of the state. "We have come here to celebrate New Year.
We are enjoying a lot. We are expecting to have snowfall
here so we can have more fun," said Alamjot, a tourist
from Punjab. Tourists rushing here hope to watch snowfall
on the New Year celebration. "In case snowfall is not
there well on time, it may reduce the influx of tourists
to Shimla," said Kamal Sharma, Deputy General Manager,
Himachal Pradesh Tourism. The state department of tourism
is staging traditional dance performances along with various
competitions and food festivals at different places to
attract the tourists here. "We are hundred per cent hopeful
that this New Year would be as good, if not better than,
as last year," said Kamal Sharma. The hotels here are
also offering New Year packages to lure the tourists.
Every year, more than one crore tourists from all over
the world visit Himachal Pradesh, 60 per cent of whom
come to Shimla only.
