Dense fog disrupts air, rail traffic in Delhi
New
Delhi: A thick fog enveloped the national capital,
disrupting more than three dozen flights and rail traffic
on Monday. Transport was thrown out of gear as air, rail
and road traffic were badly affected by the poor visibility
levels early in the morning. The visibility levels at
the Indira Gandhi International Airport dropped much below
the minimum required levels. Those waiting for the flights
were seen reading books and standing around bonfires to
beat the cold. "We are facing a lot of problems. The flight
is delayed. I have never seen such weather before. I have
been told my flight is delayed by say an hour can be delayed
by more than that," said Amit, an air passenger. Rail
traffic was also affected because of the heavy blanket
of fog that enveloped the national capital. Most of the
trains were delayed, leaving passengers stranded on the
platform. "I have to go to Varanasi. But the trains are
getting delayed. I have been waiting since the last four
hours. Almost all the trains are late," said Mahadev Tripathi,
a rail passenger. Road traffic also moved at a snail's
pace in several places as the roads remained enveloped
by thick fog leading to poor visibility. The region reels
under chilly weather with temperatures hovering around
six degree Celsius. Many preferred to stay inside their
dwellings to stay warm. North India usually witnesses
early morning fog every winter when night temperatures
often dip below five degrees Celsius.
