Shimla awaits snowfall to hail an ideal Christmas
by Hemant Chauhan

Shimla: Domestic as well as foreign tourists are converging in Shimla with hopes of celebrating Christmas and New Year eve amid snowflakes. However, many residents are apprehensive as the city had not received snowfall in the last couple of years, and the days had been slightly warm at this time of the year. Nonetheless, this year, the mercury level is dipping here and in surrounding areas. The higher reaches in Himachal Pradesh like Lahul Spiti, Manali, Chamba and Kinnaur have received 40 to 70 centimetres of snow while the lower areas have received showers. According to meteorologists, another western disturbance is in the offing as per the trends still persisting in Jammu and Kashmir region. And this week, it is expected to be clear in and around Shimla. "Sky is already overcast. There are certain western disturbances in Jammu and Kashmir region. But today weather is clear. So we can expect rainfall at higher reaches over Himachal Pradesh. But nights temperature will definitely fall as nights will get clear," said Manmohan Singh, Director, Department of Meteorology, Shimla. Traditionally, Christmas time is considered synonym with snowfall time in the western world. As such tourists from abroad plan their Christmas holidays at Shimla with hopes of celebrating a 'white' X'mas. "It's my first time in Shimla, so I didn't expect anything. But I had spent three weeks in Rajasthan, thus I was looking for someplace, which is cool. As I am from Australia and there is no snowfall over there at this time, I am looking for a snow-white Christmas!" exclaimed Joe, a tourist from Australia. Meanwhile. the residents as well as the tourists in Shimla are keen to hail the X'mas and the New Year around bonfire.
