Lucknow zoo authorities to keep animals warm
by Kamna Mathur
Lucknow:
To provide relief to the animals from the severe cold,
zoo authorities here have made special arrangements like
providing warm blankets, sacks and lighting bonfires.
Animals especially monkeys and chimpanzees have been provided
with sacks and blankets to keep them warm. Tigers and
lions have been provided with dry straw beds whereas the
deer have been supplied with para grass to help them fight
the cold wave. The reptiles keep warm under high-voltage
bulbs fitted inside the mud pots. The Serpentarium has
been covered with gunny bags in order to keep the reptiles
warm. "We have made bonfires inside. Sacks have been given
to the monkeys. We have started giving eggs in their diet.
Chimpanzees have been given blankets and extra eggs and
peanuts have been added to their diet. Water of the animals
is being changed regularly," said Renu Singh, director,
Lucknow Zoo. Zoo authorities have made certain alterations
in the diet of animals as well. Multi-vitamins and calcium
is included in their regular food and eggs are provided
to monkeys in order to keep them warm. "Administration
should do something for these animals to stay warm. They
should provide heaters for snakes. Bonfire should be lit
for elephants so that it is not difficult for them to
face this cold weather and also it doesn't look good to
see them suffer," said Saurabh, a visitor. Set up in 1921,
Lucknow zoo is also known as Prince of Wales Zoological
Gardens.
