Dense fog disrupts rail traffic

New Delhi/Allahabad: Dozens of railway passengers continue to be stranded as most of the trains in north India have been either delayed or cancelled due to poor visibility caused by thick dense fog. In the national capital, rail traffic to and from city was severely affected and most of the trains are reportedly running behind schedule. Hundreds of passengers were stranded at the New Delhi Railway Station, as majority of the trains failed to depart or arrive in time. Harried parents who had been waiting for hours to receive their children had a gruelling time in the absence of proper information from the railway authorities. "My daughter is supposed to come from Chennai by Grand Trunk Express. It is just announced that it will be late by 15 minutes. I have been waiting from 6:25 a.m. Every now and then the time keeps changing," said Satish Goel. Similar conditions prevailed in Allahabad, a prime railway junction where both arrival and departure of trains have been erratic. "Due to fog, all the trains have been delayed. We are worried and my family is going with me. As the train is not coming in time, we have to face lots of problems" noted Avinash Kumar, a stranded passenger. The impact of the dense fog has resulted in chain action of one train after another getting delayed and even cancelled. "Because of fog, our services are going at a slower pace. We have instructed all the locomotive drivers to drive slowly and to halt if the fog is very thick so that one can avoid any mishap. We have also cancelled a few of the night services," opined Rajesh Dutt Bajpai, Chief Public Relations Officer, North Central Railway.
