Winter fog throws New Delhi out of gear

New Delhi: A thick fog engulfed the national capital today as temperatures fell across northern India. Weather officials say that the western disturbances over northwest India are responsible for the sudden fall in the temperatures. The fog wreaked havoc on New Delhi's transport systems, canceling and delaying nearly ten flights and an equal number of trains. "Because of this fog, I faced a lot of problems driving on the highway. Now after reaching the airport, I have got to know that the flight has got delayed," said Debarishi Vajpayee, a man waiting outside the airport. Traffic also moved at a snail's pace in several places as the roads remained enveloped by thick blanket of fog leading to poor visibility. Moreover, the fog, accompanied by cold wave has hit the daily wage earners who are facing difficulties in getting work to earn bread and butter. "The visibility is poor, I am getting late for my work because buses are running late," said Asaf Khan, a driver. New Delhi has been witnessing a comparatively warm winter this season, but the Meteorological Department on Saturday had said that temperatures are likely to fall. While for many the fog spelt trouble and misery, others took to the fog enveloped streets to enjoy a walk in the winter chill. "Its beautiful weather. Its really warm and hot. It was like having Christmas in summer. Now, am glad that winter is back and fog is back," said Shyam, a resident. Northern India usually witnesses early morning fog every winter when night temperatures often dip below five degrees Celsius. Foggy conditions coupled with cloudy weather resulted in a dip in temperature by a few degrees in most parts of the region.
