Buddha statues being smuggled to China seized in Pakistan

Karachi: Two ancient Buddha statues have been seized by the Pakistan Customs staff at the international mail office (IMO). According to The News, the Customs department had received credible information that an effort would be made to smuggle antique Buddha statues under the garb of postal parcels. A surveillance team headed by Assistant Collector of Customs, Al Zeb Khan, was constituted to monitor the movement of postal parcels being sent out of Pakistan. The team found a China-bound postal parcel on December 18 that was booked by a man named Ejaz Ahmad from Islamabad to a Beijing addressee, Zou Jianhui. Further examination of the parcels revealed two antique Buddha statues. Archaeological experts have opined that the seized statues are more than 5000 years old and relate to the ancient Gandhara civilisation.
