Elephant show delights Volvo team members
by Juhan Samuel
Kochi:
A special elephant show organized here on Thursday
evening offered a glimpse of Indian tradition and Kerala's
culture to the members of the participating teams in the
Volvo Ocean Race in Kochi, the second-leg stopover of
the 37,000 nautical miles ocean race here. The special
show was quite a draw at the race village for the Volvo
team members. The performance of 15 caparisoned elephants
and 45 traditional artistes fascinated one and all. For
many of the visitors, it was a first ever close experience
of elephants. "This is awesome. We are filming it. It
is such a great show. Since so many people have come here,
it is really great for the race to get more people here
and it's fantastic," said Helen, Volvo Team Official.
"I think it is amazing. I think it's very different from
everything in the races every time. I think that coming
to India is a totally new experience and the experience
with the sailors where everyone is involved in the race
so the elephants and everything in India is really exciting
and different," said Bridgid Murphy, Media Manager, Puma.
Many such entertainment programmes are scheduled to enthrall
the team members during their 10-day stopover in Kochi
for their second leg of the Volvo Ocean race. With the
arrival of the last yacht Team from Russia, all the eight
participating yachts in the race have arrived in Kochi.
The Volvo Ocean Race commenced its round-the-world marathon
sailing in October 2008 and in due course it will cover
more than 39,000 nautical miles, visiting 11 ports across
the world. Starting from Alicante in Spain, it will have
stopover at Cape Town, Cochin, Qingdao, Rio de Janeiro,
Boston, Galway, Goteborg and Stockholm, before reaching
the finishing line at St.Petersburg. The race's next destination
is scheduled to be Singapore. All the teams will be leaving
Kochi on December 13.
