Nandan Kanan zoo beats the heat
by Sarada Lahangir
Bhubaneswar:
The Nandan Kanan Park here has made elaborate arrangements
that include installing thatched roof over enclosures,
sprinkling water over animals and birds and giving them
a splash in the water pool. Besides, a diet full of
fruits has been arranged for the special nourishment
of animals and birds. Authorities say they have given
special attention to cold-blooded animals like reptiles
and water animals like hippopotamus. "For the herbivores,
apart from regular food we are giving watermelon, sugarcane
and also keep ready some anti-depressant drugs that
can help reduce stress which develops due to heat and
climate change. They are also given some electrolytes
in their feed...We also provide some kind of shelter
for the deer like spotted deer so that during the peak
hours around noon they can remain there," said Ajit
Patnaik, the Nandan Kanan Zoo Director. A veterinary
doctor has also been put on duty to keep an eye on any
animal showing signs of stress and dehydration. For
visitors it is a joy watching several animals and birds
relishing a special diet inside their enclosures. "Yes,
it is hot but the natural beauty of the area is so overwhelming
and I do not mind the heat," said Dhirendra Bhowmik,
a visitor. Nandan Kanan Zoo, spread over 1,940 square
kilometers, is home to over 67 species of mammals, 18
varieties of reptiles and 81 species of birds. The zoo
enjoys an international reputation for breeding white
tigers, black panthers and crocodiles in captivity.
Nandan Kanan Zoo also houses a botanical garden and
part of it has been declared a sanctuary. In India,
the summer lasts from April to June. The weather cools
down with the monsoon's arrival in July.
