Speed Post rates slashed by 40 pc

          New Delhi: The Department of Posts has today revised the local Speed Post rates by 40 per cent. Under the new revised rates, the 'local' Speed Post rates for 'upto 50 grams' has been brought down to 12 rupees from 20 rupees. The revised rate of 12 rupees is a composite rate including service tax and education cess. The new rates come into effect from today. With this revision, Speed Post will become quite competitive in the express industry. The revision of rates has also brought some upward increase in the weight slabs above 50 grams. Local Speed Post services will be provided at all Speed Post Centres and articles meant for the same town will be delivered either on the same day or on the next working day. At the same time, Speed Post articles booked in and destined for Delhi, Ghaziabad, NOIDA, Gurgaon and Faridabad will be treated as 'local' for the purposes of Speed Post tariff. Speed Post services are available at more than 1200 towns across the country. Speed Post was launched in the year 1986 and continues to be the market leader, with a monthly traffic exceeding 1.4 crore in March 2007. The revenue from Speed Post during 2006-07 touched 449 crore rupees.
