Snowfall blocks roads in Shimla

Shimla: Heavy snowfall in Shimla has disrupted normal life. Road transport came to a standstill. Several areas were inaccessible. The hilly terrain has been covered with a blanket of snow after receiving over 30 cms of snowfall. "Traffic is closed from all sides, and buses and all are all locked and are not moving. It will take about eight to nine hours before all services are restarted. Due to the snowfall the entire Shimla shutdowns completely," said Aman Soni, a local.

Adding to the woes of the people, power supply to the city was also snapped due to the heavy snowfall. "There has not been so much (snowfall) since 1990 and that too in the month of February. There is no doubt we are facing problems, there is no electricity in our area. Trees are falling. Traffic is completely closed, which makes it difficult to move around," said AK Gupta, another local. Tourists and locals alike found themselves trudging through snow- covered streets. "We are here on holiday. We have to walk because bus services are closed which is a problem. None of the vehicles are plying because of the snow, one cannot even walk properly because of the snow and it is also very cold," said Rakesh, a tourist from Haryana. Neighbouring areas of Narkanda and Kufri have also received heavy snowfall and remained completely cut-off from Shimla.
