Snowfall
in Kufri cheers tourists in Himachal Kufri (Himachal Pradesh): After a dry spell, there is snowfall in Kufri now, and elsewhere in northern India also cold conditions returned. The tourists visiting Kufri near Shimla in Himachal Pradesh are all in a jubilation over the snowfall.
Tourists, mostly the newly wedded couples,
are arriving here to witness the snow-covered hilltop (Kufri), as a record
dry spell has given way to a light snowfall on Wednesday. The weather
situation in the State broke past records this year with January being
without any rain or snow, the first time in 37 years. "We had been here
since yesterday and there was not a flake of snow. But yesterday night,
the weather changed suddenly. Our entire trip has turned worthy. The atmosphere
has changed and we are enjoying immensely," said Rajesh, a tourist. "I
was praying to God for snow and now I am very happy. I had come here just
to see snow fall," said Sunita, Rajesh's wife. The economy of picturesque
Himachal Pradesh is heavily dependent on tourism. Over three million domestic
and foreign tourists visit the State annually. The dry spell had also
cast its shadow on apple crop in the region, backbone of Himachal Pradesh's
economy. Kufri is a tiny hill station, located 19 km from Shimla, on the
National Highway No.22. It has a Himalayan Nature park and close by is
the Indira Tourist Park. The region around Shimla including Kufri was
once a part of the Kingdom of Nepal. This region remained obscure from
the rest of the world until the British 'discovered' it in 1819. In Kufri,
the prime attractions are Mashru Peak and Indira Tourist Park. Kullu,
Manali, Shimla, Palampur and Dharamshala are famous tourist destinations
in Himachal Pradesh.
