Train passengers robbed near Kanpur Kanpur: Passengers on Mahabodhi Express from Delhi to Gaya were robbed between Etawah and Kanpur Central Railway Stations today. Mobile phones and cash were robbed. The passengers were asleep at the time of the incident. Some passengers who were awake were roughed up when they questioned the robbers. The robbers also reportedly brandished firearms and even fired a few shots, injuring over a dozen passengers. "It
was a group of youngsters and they had a gun. As they pointed the gun
towards me and fired it, I bent it down and I got hit near my eye" said
Balbir Singh, one of the injured. Consequently, the other terrified passengers
quietly conceded to the robbers' demands. Rubina, a lady passenger who
complained of having lost a lot of cash, blamed the police escort for
not reacting spontaneously. "Most of us must have been sleeping when they
came. They pointed guns towards us and snatched away the cell phones and
cash. The escorting security personnel did not do anything and watched
the scenario quietly," lamented Rubina. According to the passengers, the
robbers were present in the train for a good amount of time and appeared
on the scene only after the train steamed into Kanpur Central Station.
The Government Railway Police (GRP), to whom the safety of bonafide passengers
is entrusted, gave a different version. "This is not a case of robbery.
A few anti-socials entered the train and scuffled with passengers" said
Lajja Ram Yadav, an Inspector of the GRP, Kanpur Central Station. After
registering an FIR at Kanpur Central, the GRP is investigating the matter.
