Chennai: Night safari is being conceived at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park at Vandalur near Chennai. The objective is to show people how the animals behave in their natural habitat at night. "It's basically the displaying of animals in the night in their natural habitat so that people can see them during night," said Ananda Swami, Director, Arignar Anna Zoological Park. Visitors expressed excitement about the night safari. "We have come with family. We enjoyed watching the animals. The lion safari was very thrilling. We came to know that the government is going to introduce a night safari. People will like it," said Padma, a visitor. The Anna Zoological Park founded in 1855 is sprawled over 510 hectares and houses at least 46 endangered animals of the Western Ghats and the subcontinent. The zoo is popular for its lion safari park, which occupies 75 acres of land, and its elephant rides. The zoo has also introduced battery - operated vehicles for rides in the park. The zoo is considered one of the biggest in South East Asia. It has over 170 species of mammals, aviaries and reptiles.
