by Rajiv Kimta

Kullu: While visiting any hill station, most of us worry as to how many woollen clothes should one carry along. But with woollen clothes being available on hire in Kullu, tourists need not have any worry. With more and more tourists visiting hill stations like Shimla, Manali and Kullu, a large number of residents and small shopkeepers are offering woollen garments on nominal rent and ensuring a handsome return for it. The residents have found this business pretty convenient to operate from their houses. "We provide a woollen set that includes a coat, boots, gloves and a cap to tourists at a nominal price of rupees100 per day," said Hema Devi, a resident. The innovative idea has benefited the woollen garment industry in States like Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Tourists, who remain at constant pain at deciding how much is enough to confront an unpredictable weather, have welcomed the new practice. "It is severely cold here that led us to hire coat, boots and gloves. It is a good facility for tourists and beneficial to those who don't carry woollens," said Rohitaksh, a tourist. "Visitors need these coats no matter how much layers of clothes they try to wear. With what we provide, they feel comfortable while skating or skiing. Normal clothes tend to get wet in snow which can spoil the health and mood of tourists," said Nand Lal, a resident. The latest business of providing clothes on hire has doubled their earnings from rupees 400-500 in the past to over Rs.1,000 a day today.
