Maharashtra petrol pump owners on strike Mumbai:
Petrol pump owners across Maharashtra have gone on an indefinite strike,
protesting against the non- fulfilment of their demands. Their demands
include decreasing sales tax on petrol and diesel within the state. Around
2200 petrol pumps are on strike in the state. Besides lowering sales tax
the dealers also want a refund on it. Currently the tax is 30 and 34 percent
on petrol and diesel respectively. President of the Petroleum Dealers
Association Ravi Shinde said that apart from the tax reduction, petroleum
dealers are also protesting against the reduction of profit margins of
CNG dealers by 20 paise. In Mumbai, petrol pump owners also hampered the
Rent Control Act, which is putting pressure on them to shut down their
businesses as land owners are refusing to renew their licenses. At least
80 petrol pumps out of the 256 in Mumbai have closed down so far. Shinde
claimed the strike would affect public transport, milk van and other civic
operations, which in turn would affect the common man. He, however, clarified
that the dealers have been asked not to turn away ambulances. The Vilasrao
Deshmukh-led coalition government is said to be adamant about reducing
the sales tax on fuels. |
