Wildlife officials trap rogue leopard Wayanad(Kerala):
Wildlife officials in Kerala on Saturday trapped a rogue female leopard
that had made life miserable for the residents of Perunthata village,
prowling its pathways in search of pets and livestock and spreading terror.
Perunthata is a tiny village in Kerala northern's Wayanad district, and
is coastal state's "green paradise". Wild animals used to stray into the
village attacking inhabitants from the dense forest of Muttanga located
barely 50 kilometres away. The rogue leopard was the latest in the series
of such uninvited visits. Recently, after a series of frantic calls by
harassed villagers, a team of five experts arrived in the village and
laid a trap with a live dog as bait. They achieved success on Saturday.
"This leopard was a real terror here for the villagers. They were not
able to get out of their homes in the daytime. So as per their request,
we laid a trap to catch it and we have been successful. It will be freed
at the Muttanga wildlife sanctuary," said PM Suresh, Assistant Wildlife
Warden, Wayanad district. Suresh said wildlife officials believed the
leopard was pregnant though they were still not certain. It would now
be released into the forests of Muttanga on Sunday.
