Siliguri dengue cases alarming Siliguri:
Authorities at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH)
near Siliguri in West Bengal's Darjeeling District have said that the
cases of Dengue reported in the region are alarming, but not grim. Last
year, there were no cases of dengue in the area. But this year, eight
cases of dengue have been confirmed after blood tests. "It is not grim.
Definitely it is alarming for us because the previous year, there was
absolutely no positive case. But this year, we are getting a few positive
cases. Definitely, it is alarming but it is not grim situation," said
Dr. Arunava Sarkar, Microbiology Department in-charge, NBMCH. "Till date,
there are 60 samples for suspected Dengue cases and out of these 60 suspected
cases, eight are positive," Dr Sarkar said. Hospital officials said that
all necessary steps have been taken for the treatment of patients and
for preventing the spread of the disease. One patient has already been
discharged, and another is undergoing treatment at the NBMCH. Among the
eight dengue-affected persons, six belong to different parts of Jalpaiguri
District. The dengue epidemic has claimed 142 lives across the country
so far. Though there were speculations that the changing weather could
put a check on the mosquito menace, health authorities said a decline
in the number of cases would be seen only after ten days. According to
reports, 148 fresh cases of dengue have been reported in the last two
days, taking the number of dengue patients to 8088.
