US embassy to clear visa backlog

New Delhi: The US Embassy in New Delhi and the Consulates General in Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata are opening new visa appointments in all categories, including tourist. This was stated by US Ambassador to India David Mulford in Delhi on Thursday. Mulford said it is an effort to improve service to Indians seeking visas and to reduce the waiting time for people who currently have appointments. "The United States prides itself in providing quality service in both business and in government. One of the most important services that the United States Mission provides in India is to make the process of travelling to the United States as easy as possible. We are clearly not doing this today and we are sensitive to the inconvenience and the long wait for appointment which has characterized our visa processing systems in recent months," said Mulford.

Mulford emphasised on the future of the strong and growing bond of business and people to people contact between the two countries. "Beginning today I want to encourage people who already have a visa appointment to visit the embassy's appointment website to advance the schedule of their appointment. The appointment applications available in new term at all consulates and our aim are to make this replacement permanent. Nothing is more important than the future of the two countries then a strong and growing bond of business and people to people contact. Strengthening these connections is the future of the US India relations and we have begun this today," he added. Since September 11, 2001 , U.S. visa policies have become a hodgepodge of congressional mandates and administration actions that have produced mixed results. Although certain measures were security-oriented, they had made even legitimate travel more difficult.
