China's First Lady Liu visits Qutab Minar

New Delhi: Chinese President Hu Jintao held meetings with the Indian leadership here on bilateral relations. And, during the day, China's First Lady Liu Yongqing went on a sight-seeing in the Capital on Tuesday. Liu Yongqing, accompanying her husband Hu Jintao on his four-day visit to India, visited the Qutab Minar, a world heritage site.

A tight security arrangement was made for her visit to the Qutab Minar complex, which houses a 72.5 metre tall minaret, also home to the oldest Indian mosque and several tombs. Qutab Minar, a soaring tower of early Muslim vintage, has five distinct stories, each marked by a projecting balcony. The first three stories are made of red sandstone, while the fourth and fifth are made of marble and sandstone. It is covered with intricate carvings and deeply inscribed verses from the Quran. Married to one of the most powerful men in the world, Liu Yogqing is two years elder to her husband and maintains her maiden name, as is the custom in China.

Earlier in the day, reiterating their shared vision and desire for maintaining the fundamental principles on which Sino-Indian relations stand, Hu and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said in their Joint Declaration that they were satisfied with the "all- round progress" in ties in recent years. Describing the relationship as being both global and strategic in stature and significance, both leaders said that t bright prospects exist for their common development. They said the strategic partnership between the two countries is consistent with their roles as two major developing countries, adding, "their partnership is vital for international efforts to deal with global challenges and threats". The neighbours agreed to boost trade and renew efforts to solve their border dispute, adding there was enough room for the Asian giants to grow together.
