150 stranded passengers rescued near Srinagar
by Suhail Ahmed

Srinagar: One hundred and fifty passengers who have been stranded in Jammu and Kashmir on the Srinagar-Leh Highway for several days have rescued. They were taken to Drass and put up in the Government High School. Nineteen vehicles, including two belonging to the police were stranded along the 434-kilometre-long highway. The vehicles are said to be stranded on either side of the strategically-located Zojilla Pass, which has been blocked by heavy snowfall and landslides. The Zojilla Pass remains closed for six months of the year, and will reopen in May 2007. The highway was scheduled to be closed for the winter from November 15, but was closed earlier following snowfall between Sonamarg-Zojila and Gumri. Meanwhile, the authorities have claimed that they have stored all essential commodities, including rice, flour, cooking gas, kerosene and other eatables in Leh, Kargil and other areas of Ladakh.
