can get foreign newspapers in Jaipur Jaipur: Foreign tourists who are visiting Jaipur will now get their favourite newspapers here. Some enterprising newspaper hawkers are at the job. Der Spiegel, Die Welt, Le Monde, La Tribune, NRC Handelsbald, The Warsaw Voice are some of the dailies and periodicals that are being sold by roadside hawkers in the city. "I am enjoying my favourite newspaper which I used to read in France everyday. It feels really nice to have this newspaper here. It surprised me to find this newspaper being sold here in Jaipur," said Katherine, a tourist from France. Newspaper hawkers of Jaipur sell newspapers of over 50 countries, mostly at the euro or dollar rates including nominal air surcharges and other incidentals. Although these newspapers reach Jaipur a day or two late, the visitors are more than happy to buy them. "The foreigners are surprised to find that their favourite newspaper is available in Rajasthan. They feel really happy and we are glad as well that we are able to provide them what they want," said Manish, a hawker of foreign newspapers and journals. Many view this as a new kind of hospitality that makes foreign tourists feel at home. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber, founded Jaipur with his architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya in 1727 AD. Today, the city is known as the first planned city of India. In the 19th century the city grew rapidly and became prosperous, with a population of 160,000 in 1900, and the city's wide boulevards were paved and lit with gas. In 2003, its approximately population was 2.7 million. The city was built of pink stucco in imitation of sandstone, and is remarkable among pre-modern Indian cities for the width and regularity of its streets. Jaipur
is built in the form of a nine-part Mandala known as the 'Pithapada'.
Rajasthan has many magnificent palaces, sand dunes, wildlife, and rich
culture. About a million foreign and 16 million domestic tourists visit
the city a year.
